Destiny 2 director posts apology video, promises better communication

Destiny 2 director, Joe Blackburn, has released a new video where he apologizes for the recent State of the Game update and promises better communication as we approach the release of Destiny 2: The Final Shape. Bungie and the popular FPS game have faced criticism for their lack of attention to PvP issues in Destiny 2 following the previous State of the Game update on August 3rd. Blackburn acknowledges the need for improved communication and emphasizes that the safety of the community is their top priority.

Destiny 2 regularly provides State of the Game updates to inform players about upcoming changes, game modes, and new features. However, the latest update received negative feedback as players felt that it did not adequately address concerns regarding PvP and new maps for Destiny 2.

With The Final Shape, the highly anticipated concluding DLC for the Destiny 2 Light and Darkness saga, nearing its release, game director Joe Blackburn has shared a 16-minute video to discuss the changes in communication and improvements to PvP and map releases.

Blackburn acknowledges the shortcomings of the previous State of the Game communication, stating, “A couple of weeks ago, we released a State of the Game communication that fell below your expectations. It failed to provide the vision we normally deliver, and it’s my responsibility for not giving it the care and attention it deserved, as many of us were fully focused on The Final Shape.”

Alongside playing the game himself, Blackburn plans to connect with the community by streaming his gameplay, interacting with players, and learning from experts. He assures that while these streams may not be filled with major announcements, they will provide an opportunity for players to engage with him. He states, “I want to commit, get out there, play some PvP, learn from some experts, and play alongside all of you next season.”

Blackburn also emphasizes that Bungie will continue to use its official social media channels to communicate with the community and promises increased engagement. However, the safety of community members and leaders remains their top priority.

He mentions, “We have acknowledged that the development team is always busy, and while our primary focus is delivering exceptional content to all of you, it doesn’t mean our communication should suffer. So, our first step is to communicate with all of you more.”

Prior to Destiny 2 Season 22, Blackburn announces that Bungie is rethinking their approach to map releases. Instead of trickling out maps throughout the year, they plan to release a complete map pack that will be available for free to all players.

Blackburn explains, “It’s evident that the slow trickle of PvP maps is not having the desired impact. Releasing only one new map each year forces us to create a map that tries to cater to everyone’s preferences, resulting in a map that excels in nothing. Therefore, next year, we will change our strategy. Instead of gradually releasing maps, we will focus on delivering a comprehensive map pack that will be accessible to everyone.”

In other news, Destiny 2 recently announced a new voice actor for Commander Zavala following the departure of Lance Reddick. As the game approaches its sixth anniversary in September 2023, players can watch the full video from Joe Blackburn, originally posted on Twitter and later uploaded to YouTube by ‘c0nflicx.’
