Deep dive into Meta’s algorithms shows that America’s political polarization has no easy fix

The revolutionary studies released on Thursday shed light on the complex challenges surrounding misinformation and political polarization amplified by the powerful algorithms used by Facebook and Instagram. These four groundbreaking research papers, published in prestigious journals like Science and Nature, not only highlight the prevalence of political echo chambers on Facebook but also reveal that changing the platforms’ algorithms alone is not enough to address these issues. The algorithms, which drive social media platforms’ content recommendations based on users’ past clicks, have been criticized for promoting misinformation and aggravating political divisions. Regulations targeting these systems have been proposed as a way to combat the spread of misinformation and reduce polarization. However, when the researchers tweaked the algorithms during the 2020 election, they observed minimal impact on users’ political attitudes. Talia Jomini Stroud, the director of the Center for Media Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin and one of the leaders of the studies, emphasized the algorithms’ significant influence in shaping users’ experiences and the existence of ideological segregation in political news exposure. The popular proposals to change social media algorithms did not sway political attitudes, debunking the notion of a simple solution. While political differences are a natural part of a healthy democracy, polarization occurs when these differences start to drive citizens apart and erode the shared bonds of society. Such polarization can undermine trust in democratic institutions and the free press, leading to what is known as “affective polarization,” where citizens view each other more as enemies than legitimate opposition. This dangerous situation can even escalate into violence, as witnessed in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol by then-President Donald Trump’s supporters. The research team obtained extensive access to Facebook and Instagram data from the 2020 election through a partnership with Meta, the platforms’ parent company. Meta played no role in controlling the researchers’ findings. Their analysis showed that replacing the algorithm with a simple chronological listing of friends’ posts, which Facebook recently made available as an option, had no significant impact on polarization. Similarly, disabling Facebook’s reshare option, which enables quick sharing of viral posts, resulted in reduced exposure to unreliable sources and less political news overall, but it did not substantially alter users’ political attitudes. Additionally, reducing the amount of content from ideologically aligned accounts on Facebook had no noteworthy effect on polarization, susceptibility to misinformation, or extremist views. These findings suggest that Facebook users actively seek out content that aligns with their own views, and the algorithms merely facilitate this behavior. Removing the algorithm entirely drastically decreased users’ time on Facebook and Instagram while increasing their time on other platforms like TikTok and YouTube, highlighting the significant role these algorithms play in Meta’s strategy within the increasingly competitive social media landscape. In response to the research, Nick Clegg, Meta’s president for global affairs, emphasized that the findings provided little evidence that key features of Meta’s platforms alone cause harmful polarization or significantly impact political attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors. Katie Harbath, Facebook’s former director of public policy, who was not involved in the research, emphasized the need for more research on social media’s role in American democracy and challenged assumptions about its impact. The research, she said, reminded us that polarization and political beliefs are influenced by numerous factors beyond social media. However, critics argue that the research conducted in the midst of an election and its focus on a limited time period make it incomplete. They contend that it fails to account for the cumulative effects of years of social media misinformation on polarization. Free Press, a non-profit organization advocating for civil rights in technology and media, criticized Meta’s use of this research as calculated spin, claiming that Meta executives are seizing on limited findings to evade responsibility for increasing political polarization and violence. Nora Benavidez, the senior counsel and director of digital justice and civil rights at Free Press, stressed that Meta-endorsed studies examining narrow time periods should not be used as excuses for allowing the spread of lies. The four studies also shed light on the ideological differences among Facebook users and how conservatives and liberals employ the platform differently to consume news and political information. Conservative users are more likely to consume content that has been flagged as misinformation by fact-checkers and have a more extensive selection of conservative-leaning websites. Among the political news sources identified by fact-checkers as spreading misinformation, 97% were more popular among conservatives than liberals. The researchers acknowledged some limitations to their work. While they found that altering Facebook’s algorithms had minimal impact on polarization, they caution that their study only covered a few months during the 2020 election, and therefore cannot assess the long-term effects of the algorithms since their inception years ago. They also noted that people derive their news and information from a variety of sources, including television, radio, the internet, and word-of-mouth, all of which can influence their opinions. Many in the United States attribute polarization to the news media’s role. The researchers meticulously analyzed data from millions of Facebook and Instagram users and conducted surveys with selected participants, ensuring they removed all identifying information for privacy reasons. David Lazer, the Northeastern professor who worked on all four papers, initially doubted that Meta would grant the researchers the required access, but he was pleasantly surprised when they did. He commended Meta for imposing reasonable legal and privacy conditions. The collaboration will release more studies in the coming months, furthering our understanding of these complex issues. In summary, the research exposes the intricate nature of misinformation and political polarization on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Altering algorithms alone is insufficient to tackle these challenges, and popular proposals for change did not yield significant results. Users actively seek out content that aligns with their views, while algorithms simply facilitate this behavior. The research provides valuable insights into the ideological differences among Facebook users and the impact of algorithms on polarization. However, critics argue that the research’s scope was limited, emphasizing the need for further investigation into the long-term effects of algorithms and the cumulative impact of social media misinformation.
