Kelly Thompson has announced that she is set to write a new ongoing Birds of Prey series with Black Canary, to be drawn by Leonardo Romero and Jordie Bellaire. This marks Thompson’s move from Marvel to DC Comics. She tweeted “An all-new era begins! Thompson, @Leo__Romero & #Bellaire… breaking hearts & faces over @DCComics this fall! Black Canary is building the most dangerous #BirdsOfPrey team yet… who do YOU think will make the cut? #BOP…”

Thompson has given hints as to which characters might feature in the series. Big Barda and Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl have both been announced as new members. Harley Quinn will presumably be one of the Birds Of Prey, as indicated by one of the red hearts in Thompson’s tweet. Batgirl is a black heart, but it is unclear whether Big Barda is seen as blue or red. Thompson tells us “This was blue […] but an argument can absolutely be made for red […] Either way two ‘reds’ left.”

More information on the series will be revealed later this week. The classic all-ladies vibe will be maintained for this arc. Expect to see big names among the characters as the team seeks to boost sales. Solicits and covers will appear next week, with the book itself debuting in September.

Birds of Prey has been published by DC Comics since 1996 and is a partnership between Black Canary and Barbara Gordon as Oracle. It has since expanded to include other superheroines. The comic had a live-action TV series in 2002 and a film in 2020, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
