David Tennant’s New ‘Doctor Who’ Regeneration Is “Slightly More Human” Than the Last

The Big Picture

  • The Fourteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, portrayed by David Tennant, is described by showrunner Russell T. Davies as “slightly more human” than the Tenth Doctor.
  • Davies found it easy to write for Tennant and his companion Donna Noble because the characters of Doctor Who remain memorable and never really leave your mind.
  • Tennant will appear in three specials before handing over the role to the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, in the upcoming fourteenth season of the series.

The new Doctor on Doctor Who may have the same face as one of his previous incarnations, but he’s not the same man. Showrunner Russell T. Davies says the Fourteenth Doctor is more human than the Tenth.

In a new interview with Digital Spy, Davies notes that the Fourteenth Doctor, who like the Tenth is portrayed by David Tennant, is “slightly more human” than his predecessor. Davies also noted that it was easy to write for both Tennant and his returning companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) again; “I didn’t even go and watch an old episode on iPlayer because they never quite go really… those big characters don’t go from your head. They keep on ticking away.” Tennant will appear in three specials debuting in late November and early December before handing things over to the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), who will star in the upcoming fourteenth season of the series.

Who is the Tenth Doctor?

After Christopher Eccleston departed the revived Doctor Who after one season, he was recast with David Tennant, who made his cameo debut in the first-season finale, “The Parting of the Ways”, and went on to make his full first appearance in the 2005 holiday special “The Christmas Invasion”. Recasting the lead role in Doctor Who is quite easy; early in the show’s lengthy run, it was established that members of his race, the Time Lords, “regenerate” into a new individual upon their deaths. The Tenth would go on to encounter more of his old enemies, including the biomechanical Cybermen, the warlike Sontarans, and the renegade Time Lord the Master. The first season was well-received, but under Tennant the show achieved new heights of worldwide popularity. After three seasons and a number of specials, the Tenth Doctor perished while preventing the Time Lords from erasing all other life in the universe, and regenerated into the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith).

The Tenth Doctor returned for the 2013 anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor”, which teamed Ten and Eleven with the War Doctor (John Hurt); that episode also featured an appearance from Fourth Doctor actor Tom Baker, implying that previous incarnations of a Time Lord can resurface. That was confirmed in the 2022 special “The Power of the Doctor”, in which the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) regenerated into the Fourteenth who just happened to be identical to the Tenth.
