Danny DeVito Expresses Interest in Returning to the Batman Universe

In this era of the multiverse, it appears that any actor from a comic book movie is fair game to be brought back into action, regardless of whether they are alive or dead. While some audiences may be growing weary of the multiverse madness, one actor is eager to jump back into the fray. Danny DeVito has expressed his willingness to reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot, also known as The Penguin. DeVito famously portrayed the iconic villain in Tim Burton’s 1992 sequel, Batman Returns, delivering a performance that was both unsettling and unforgettable.

DeVito’s interest in returning to the role comes as this year’s The Flash brings back Michael Keaton’s Batman, who co-starred with DeVito in Burton’s Batman adaptation. In an interview with SFX magazine, DeVito revealed, “I would definitely consider [returning to the franchise]. Batman Returns was a great part, it was operatic. You could just pull out all the stops. There were so many motivating things, so many things churning up inside of him. Being the odd man out – the odd bird out – brought the character out of me. It was an emotional experience for me because I felt it was an opportunity of a lifetime to play Oswald Cobblepot with Tim’s vision and design. Tim is a genius to me.”

Clearly, the role of The Penguin holds a special place in DeVito’s heart, as he proudly showcases the original Penguin umbrella prop from the film during the interview. His enthusiasm to return to the role remains strong despite the critical backlash and commercial disappointment surrounding The Flash, which has been criticized for its excessive use of cameos, with some accusing them of being shallow and disrespectful due to the CGI appearances of deceased actors.

As for DeVito’s future projects, he continues to embrace Burton’s brand of playful horror in his latest role. In Disney’s Haunted Mansion, DeVito portrays Bruce, a paranormal enthusiast who teams up with Gabbie (played by Rosario Dawson), a single mother who discovers unwelcome paranormal guests in her new home. The film features a ragtag team of supposed paranormal experts, including a priest (Owen Wilson), a tour guide (LaKeith Stanfield), and a medium (Tiffany Haddish). Haunted Mansion is based on Disney’s beloved theme park attraction of the same name, adding to the growing list of film adaptations inspired by Disney’s park rides, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Country Bears, Jungle Cruise, and Tomorrowland.

Fans can catch Haunted Mansion exclusively in theaters starting on July 28th. For a sneak peek, check out the trailer for the film below.
