This information, sourced from the Japanese news site Lasisa (as reported by Anime News Network), highlights the widespread reach of the manga, created by Yoshito Usui and serialising in August 1990 across 50 volumes. It remains unclear whether the circulation figure accounts for digital copies.
However, it should be noted that the reported 148 million copies represent those in circulation, not necessarily those sold. This signifies the total number of printed Crayon Shin-chan manga volumes distributed to retailers, although not all copies have been purchased by consumers.
Nevertheless, this substantial print volume shows the manga’s continued demand and popularity across the regions where it is available, which does not include India.
The Crayon Shin-chan anime enjoys popularity in Asia, particularly in India, where it premiered on Hungama TV in 2006, later extending to Disney Channel India.
Initially airing in an uncensored format that included its signature adult humour, the show faced complaints from parental groups and was taken off the air in 2008. Concerns primarily revolved around Shin-chan’s behaviour, particularly his interactions with his mother Mitsy (Misae Nohara) and comments on her appearance. Despite the series originally targeting older audiences, the localised version for Indian audiences was aimed at children. It returned to Indian television in 2009, but in a significantly censored and edited format, continuing its run ever since.
