Could ‘Saw Patrol’ Actually Generate the Same Hype as ‘Barbenheimer’?

The cultural fallout of the Barbenheimer phenomenon was inevitable, although few dare to acknowledge it. Once the online community embraced the Christopher Nolan-Greta Gerwig double feature meme, it was only a matter of time before internet users started searching for the next hilariously mismatched double feature. Unfortunately, most of these attempts fall short of replicating the unique incongruity that Oppenheimer and Barbie embodied together.

One such example that caught attention prior to Barbenheimer Weekend is the simultaneous release of franchise horror film Saw X and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie on September 29. While “Saw Patrol” may come across as a desperate attempt to recreate the Barbenheimer phenomenon, it is arguably the most promising contender that has emerged in the aftermath of the Nolan-Gerwig double feature. This is due to the contrasting elements between the two films, with The Mighty Movie featuring four-legged heroes and Saw X likely to present a grisly display of severed limbs.

However, despite the marketable distinction between Saw X and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, it is highly unlikely that Saw Patrol will have a fraction of the impact that Barbenheimer had.

Firstly, Saw Patrol, like other double feature memes circulating online recently, is entirely derivative of the Barbenheimer phenomenon. The forced and unoriginal nature of Saw Patrol’s concept makes it far less appealing compared to its predecessor.

Additionally, the two films themselves occupy niche territories, unlike Barbie and Oppenheimer, which are both high-quality blockbusters that cater to a wide adult audience. This independent appeal to adults contributed to the success of the double feature experience.

The same cannot be said for Saw X and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie. The Saw franchise is known for its gruesome and gory content, which immediately limits its potential audience to dedicated and desensitized fans, along with a few curious newcomers unaffected by squeamishness. On the other hand, The Mighty Movie targets young children, and it is difficult to imagine adults finding any enjoyment in watching it, unless they are solely driven by the Saw Patrol meme.

Paramount’s attempt to ride on the coattails of Barbenheimer falls short. They will likely struggle to achieve significant success with these films, but best of luck to them nonetheless.
