Could AMD Unveil the Ultimate Laptop of 2023?

It seems that AMD’s groundbreaking 3D V-Cache technology may be making its way to laptops, and the specific laptop that will receive this 3D treatment could potentially be a truly exceptional device.

An Asus ROG Strix laptop has been found to feature the Ryzen 9 7950HX3D chip. Will the inclusion of 3D V-Cache propel this laptop to the top of every best laptops list, or will it simply be a power-hungry desktop compressed into a smaller form?

AMD’s previous CPUs have already showcased the impressive cache capabilities of their 3D V-Cache technology. Although this technology has yet to be introduced in laptops, there are indications that this may change soon, assuming the rumors are accurate. However, until AMD or Asus confirms these reports, it’s important to temper our excitement and await an official statement.

For now, let’s engage in some enjoyable speculation. The chip first appeared on Weibo, a Chinese platform, but was subsequently taken down. Fortunately, a screenshot of the chip was preserved by @9550pro on Twitter. This chip is the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, featuring 16 cores, 32 threads, and 128MB of L3 cache.

In addition to the screenshot, Tom’s Hardware discovered an actual product listing for the unreleased Asus ROG Strix. This laptop is a 17-inch 1440p model that boasts Nvidia’s top GPU, the RTX 4090, and 32GB of DDR5 RAM. The spec sheet erroneously lists the CPU cache as 64MB, but it should actually be 128MB, which is the cache capacity of the 7950X3D chip.

Unsurprisingly, this laptop will come with a high price tag. It is priced at £3,904 in the UK, which is approximately $5,000. However, the cost in the US remains unknown until it becomes available in that market.

Known as the Dragon Range chip, this laptop will place a standard desktop CPU within a significantly smaller laptop chassis. Consequently, the laptop may generate a considerable amount of heat, and depending on the processor’s power consumption, the device may be more akin to a portable desktop than a traditional laptop, resulting in limited battery life.

Undoubtedly, the combination of the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D and the RTX 4090 will deliver unparalleled performance in a laptop. However, the limited space and powerful components may result in thermal throttling. Asus has likely taken this into consideration and designed a fairly bulky laptop, as the 17-inch model is said to weigh just under 7 pounds.

If the rumors are true, this laptop is expected to hit the market later this year, so we may receive further updates in the near future.
