According to a report tonight, sources indicate that SAG-AFTRA & AMPTP are considering extending contract negotiations beyond the July 4th holiday.

As the Writers Guild of America (WGA)/AMPTP writers’ strike continues, a report from Deadline Hollywood reveals that SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP are contemplating extending negotiations beyond the upcoming Friday deadline. The potential extension would occur until next week, potentially July 7th. This decision comes as prominent actors have joined forces in a letter to SAG-AFTRA, urging the union not to compromise on their key demands. The release of this letter has added complexity to the ongoing talks. Additionally, an extension is being considered to accommodate the July 4th holiday. It’s worth noting that negotiations between the two parties were previously extended past the deadline in 2014 and 2017.

WGA, DGA & SAG-AFTRA/AMPTP Timeline

June 23, 2023: DGA/AMPTP Deal Ratified: The tentative deal between the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and AMPTP has been officially ratified. With 87% of eligible members voting in favor, the three-year deal will go into effect on July 1, 2023, and run through June 30, 2026. The DGA highlights significant advancements for its members in areas such as wages, global streaming residuals, safety, diversity, and creative rights. Furthermore, the agreement establishes minimum terms and conditions for non-dramatic programs made for SVOD and high-budget dramatic programs made for AVOD, while also reaffirming that generative AI cannot replace union members’ duties.

June 24, 2023: SAG-AFTRA/AMPTP Negotiations: SAG-AFTRA National President Fran Drescher and National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland provide a positive update on the ongoing negotiations. While exact details remain confidential, Drescher assures members that the discussions have been extremely productive and focused on addressing crucial issues important to them. Crabtree-Ireland adds that both sides are putting in extensive effort to reach a fair deal that recognizes the contributions of SAG-AFTRA members. The negotiations have until June 30th to finalize an agreement, although SAG-AFTRA can suspend a strike call if fruitful progress is made before the deadline.

June 26, 2023: Fran Drescher Receives Re-Election Support: Fran Drescher, who is running for re-election as SAG-AFTRA President, garners endorsements from both union political parties, Unite for Strength and Membership First. This unusual show of support indicates that Drescher is delivering favorable results and warns potential opponents against obstructing any potential deal between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP.

June 27, 2023: Actors Express Concerns: Over 300 actors, including Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Quinta Brunson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ben Stiller, Neil Patrick Harris, Amy Schumer, and Amy Poehler, sign a letter addressed to SAG-AFTRA Leadership and the Negotiating Committee. In the letter, they emphasize that the current negotiations represent a critical point in the industry and demand a deal that addresses their wage concerns, creative freedom, and the power of the union. The letter underscores their belief that previous years’ deals have undermined these aspects and calls for a course correction. SAG-AFTRA represents over 160,000 members.
