In a recent interview with IGN, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator of the hit series Fleabag and an actor in the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, confirmed that she is working on a Tomb Raider streaming series for Amazon’s Prime Video. Waller-Bridge will script and executive produce the series based on the long-standing video game franchise.
Although comedy made Waller-Bridge a star, she is no stranger to the action-adventure genre, having written the script for the James Bond film No Time to Die and starred in an Indiana Jones movie. Furthermore, the showrunner for the first season of the thrilling Killing Eve.
IGN asked Waller-Bridge what she has learned from her previous franchises, which she would like to incorporate into Tomb Raider. She stated, “There’s so much I can incorporate. I mean, the character of Lara Croft was inspired by Indiana Jones and James Bond. So there’s so much, and it just felt like the perfect final step in my own personal adventure through this kind of franchise world.”
In her answer, Waller-Bridge emphasized that something important she learned from her previous work is to keep the focus on the characters. This keeps things grounded no matter how massive the action sequences may become. Waller-Bridge aims to emulate this in the creation of her Tomb Raider series.
Although no premiere date, star, or director has been announced yet, the Tomb Raider series is still in early development. Moreover, Amazon recently purchased the franchise from Embracer, with Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics currently tasked with developing the “biggest, most expansive Tomb Raider game to date.”
