Composer for Ferrari Film Completes Score in Just One Week

Creating a truly captivating cinematic experience requires more than just a clear director’s vision. It requires the perfect blend of cinematography, costume design, performances, dialogue, and, of course, music. Music holds a special place in the process of film creation, shaping the story and guiding the audience’s emotions towards the characters and situations unfolding on screen. One composer who understands the power of music in film is Daniel Pemberton, known for his work on titles like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Steve Jobs,” “All the Money in the World,” “Birds of Prey,” and “Amsterdam.” In an interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at the Mediterranean Film Festival, Pemberton revealed that he managed to create a full soundtrack for Michael Mann’s upcoming film, “Ferrari,” in less than a week.

Yes, you read that correctly. Pemberton orchestrated and arranged every note of the film’s music in just seven days. Weintraub was as surprised as anyone by this feat, especially considering Pemberton’s involvement in the “Enola Holmes” franchise as well. Pemberton described the experience as being like a Ferrari driver, where he had to put his foot on the pedal and just go. Initially, he didn’t think he had the time to take on the project, but when a small window of opportunity opened up, he jumped at the chance. At first, Pemberton was only tasked with working on the racing scenes, as Michael Mann felt they weren’t quite working and wanted a fresh perspective. However, once Mann saw what Pemberton had done with those sequences, he was so impressed that he asked him to score the rest of the movie. Pemberton started writing on a Thursday and had a full orchestra in the studio recording the following Wednesday.

Pemberton faced a significant challenge during the process: blending the music seamlessly with the sounds of the racing scenes. He acknowledged that the sound of the cars themselves is like the score in some ways, and the music had to complement it without overpowering it. Pemberton is known for his meticulousness when it comes to film music, and he knew he had to go all in to meet Mann’s high standards. Audiences can expect a mix of high-string energy and low tones, allowing the engines to become part of the score. Pemberton described the experience as extremely intense but ultimately satisfying, as Mann was genuinely happy with the final result.

“Ferrari” is a biographical film that delves into the real-life story of Enzo Ferrari, who faces personal challenges while preparing for the 1957 Mille Miglia race. Adam Driver takes on the titular role, with Penélope Cruz portraying his wife, Laura Ferrari, a performance Pemberton describes as amazing. The film also stars Shailene Woodley, Patrick Dempsey, Sarah Gadon, Giuseppe Bonifati, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell, and Michele Savoia.

Although “Ferrari” may seem like just another sports film on the surface, Pemberton assures that it goes much deeper. Alongside Ferrari’s rise to racing stardom, the film explores the madness of motor racing and sheds light on how the sport came to be. It also delves into the complex drama of the characters’ lives, tackling themes of grief alongside the racing narrative.
