Comedian Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI, Claiming Copyright Infringement

Comedian Sarah Silverman, along with authors Richard Kadrey and Christopher Golden, have taken legal action against Meta Platforms and OpenAI, accusing them of copyright infringement. The lawsuits, filed in a San Francisco federal court, claim that Meta and OpenAI used their copyrighted content to train AI language models without permission.

As of now, both Meta and OpenAI have not provided any comments regarding the allegations.

These lawsuits highlight the potential legal issues that developers of chat bots may face when utilizing copyrighted material to create applications that provide realistic responses to user queries.

Silverman, Kadrey, and Golden argue that Meta and OpenAI utilized their literary works to develop their large language models, which are sold as powerful tools for automating tasks by simulating human conversation.

The plaintiffs claim in the lawsuit against Meta that leaked information about the company’s AI business reveals unauthorized usage of their work.

In the lawsuit against OpenAI, it is alleged that summaries generated by ChatGPT indicate that the bot was trained on their copyrighted content. Although the summaries contain certain inaccuracies, they demonstrate that ChatGPT possesses knowledge of specific works from the training dataset.

The lawsuits seek unspecified financial damages on behalf of a nationwide class of copyright owners whose works were allegedly infringed.
