Combined, the costs of Star Citizen surpass those of Cyberpunk 2077, GTA 5, and RDR2.

The production budget for Star Citizen has reached legendary proportions, both within and outside of the space game’s community. Waiting over a decade for a game’s development, especially if you’ve contributed to crowdfunding it, poses a challenge. While progress is being made on Star Citizen, its budget has now surpassed that of multiple triple-A games combined, making it truly astonishing.

Online disputes regarding the funding of the Star Citizen project have persisted throughout the years. In its decade-long production, the game has accumulated over $580 million in development costs, as stated on its funding page. To put this into perspective, consider some of the biggest and most famously expensive triple-A games. Grand Theft Auto 5’s development cost was reported to be $137 million, Red Dead Redemption 2’s at $170 million, and Cyberpunk 2077’s at $174 million, according to PlayerAuctions.

This means that even when combined, the development costs of three of the largest videogames ever made are still lower than the current budget of Star Citizen, which has no confirmed release date.
