Climate Scientists Have Three Concerning Observations at Present.

In light of recent discussions about climate change, a question was raised on social media about what caused climate change before humans existed. This question, however, misses the mark, as climate has always changed naturally with or without human existence. That being said, current anthropogenic activities are amplifying climate change now more than ever. In 2023, we have noticed three alarming trends that have caught the attention of climate scientists.

Firstly, the global 2-meter temperature anomalies are rising at an unprecedented rate with the year 2023 trending well above any other years since recordkeeping began. While natural variability associated with complicated dynamics and modes within the atmosphere-ocean system may be partially responsible, anthropogenic climate change is the main contributor. The shift into an El Niño pattern will likely continue to influence global temperatures, but it will not suffice as a complete explanation for the ongoing temperature rise.

Secondly, sea surface temperatures (SST) are also increasing, as illustrated by the current SST anomalies around the globe. This will have significant implications for hurricane season, ocean state, and global weather patterns. Warmer oceans will also increase the likelihood of extreme weather events in the future.

Thirdly, carbon dioxide levels measured at NOAA’s facility at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, reached a peak of 424 parts per million (ppm) in May 2023, representing a significant increase of 3.0 ppm over May 2022. This is the fourth-largest annual increase recorded in NOAA’s history. Carbon dioxide levels are now more than 50% higher than they were before the industrial era, which is a major cause for concern.

It is evident that human activity is playing a significant role in the changes we are seeing in our climate. It is time for us to take action and make changes to reduce our carbon footprint before we reach the point of no return.
