Chocobo GP, the Final Fantasy Racing Game, Eliminates Free-To-Play Model and Microtransactions

Square Enix recently made a subtle update to their Final Fantasy racing game, Chocobo GP, allowing players to unlock all in-game items without spending any money. The game no longer features microtransactions, providing a more enjoyable experience for players. This news was reported by Nintendeal, who noticed the change in the game’s eShop listing. Previously, there were two versions of the game, Chocobo GP Lite and Chocobo GP, both of which included microtransactions, despite the latter being priced at $50.

Square Enix re-released Chocobo GP on June 15, now offering all unlockables in-game without the need for microtransactions. If you had previously played Chocobo GP Lite, you can purchase the upgrade to transfer your save data. Nintendeal shared this exciting news on Twitter, along with links for upgrading and the game’s new release date.

While it appears that the game has been free of microtransactions for some time, this new update ensures that all timed-exclusive content is readily available to unlock. This includes new vehicle colors tied to specific seasons, as well as characters and costumes that can now be obtained through grinding.

The new version of the game on the eShop is actually the Chocobo GP Lite version, with an option to upgrade to the full version. If you have already downloaded Lite, it is recommended to purchase the “upgrade to the full game” DLC instead.

Earlier in May, Square Enix announced the discontinuation of Chocobo GP Lite in all regions, with the Mythril currency losing its value on May 31. However, players who already downloaded the game could still continue playing and upgrade to the full version.

While the removal of microtransactions may entice players who were turned off by the previous free-to-play mechanics, it’s important to note that Square Enix announced in December 2022 that there will be no further large-scale updates to the game after the Season 5 update on December 21, 2022. Despite this, there is still a substantial amount of content in Chocobo GP, making it worth exploring for fans of the Final Fantasy series before the release of Final Fantasy 16.

In conclusion, Square Enix has improved Chocobo GP by removing microtransactions and allowing players to unlock all in-game items without spending money. This update brings more accessibility and enjoyment to the game, providing a new reason for players to try it out. However, it’s worth noting that there will be no major updates to the game in the future. So, if you’re looking for a Final Fantasy fix, Chocobo GP is definitely worth checking out.
