China Apple: Chinese vice premier makes an ‘offer’ to Apple

Apple CEO Tim Cook made a ‘surprise’ visit to China this week. His visit came soon after reports suggested that Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro outsold the iPhone 15 in the country. During his visit, Cook met China’s vice premier Ding Duexiang who reportedly told the top executive that the company is welcome to participate in developing China’s digital economy.
According to a report by news agency Reuters, Ding offered Cook more opportunities to invest in the country.
“China is willing to provide more opportunities for foreign-funded enterprises, including Apple to develop in the country,” Ding was quoted as saying after a meeting on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Cook reportedly said Apple was confident in the prospects of the Chinese market. He said he was willing to strengthen cooperation with China in fields, including high-end manufacturing and digital economy.
Apple’s ‘problems’ in China
The competition between Apple and China’s Huawei has heated up as sales of iPhone 15 met with a lukewarm response. China is Apple’s third-largest market and it is an extremely crucial one because sans China, the overall shipments of iPhone could be impacted.
According to a report by market research firm Counterpoint Research, sales of iPhone 15 models in their first 17 days in China were down 4.5% compared to the iPhone 14.
China in September widened curbs on the use of iPhones by state employees as reports said that the government asked some central government agencies to stop using their Apple handsets at work.
Multiple reports also suggest that Apple has shelved the third season of Jon Stewart’s The Problem With Jon Stewart show because the host and his team were not “aligned” with the company’s views on topics discussed, which included AI and China.
