CES 2023: Asus ROG Raikiri Pro Controller With 1.3-Inch OLED Display, Tri-Mode Connectivity Launched

Asus has unveiled its latest gaming controllers, the ROG Raikiri series, for both PC and Xbox consoles at the renowned Consumer Electronics Show (CES) of 2023. In line with their recent introduction of additional displays in their Republic of Gamers (ROG) series laptops and smartphones, Asus has incorporated an OLED display into their new Raikiri controllers. The ROG Raikiri lineup consists of two controllers: the standard Asus ROG Raikiri controller, providing wired connectivity, and the high-end ROG Raikiri Pro controller, offering wireless connectivity alongside a 1.3-inch OLED display. These controllers were announced alongside a range of Asus laptops and ROG-branded hardware at CES 2023 in Las Vegas, and will be available for purchase in the first quarter of this year. Although Asus has not disclosed the pricing details for these products, they are expected to deliver top-tier performance and features.

The Asus ROG Raikiri controller showcases a standard model with wired connectivity, positioning it as the more affordable option when pricing is eventually revealed. This controller aims to deliver the essential functions, enhanced by two additional programmable buttons located on the back, conveniently configurable using Asus’ Armoury Crate software. These rear buttons can also be programmed for joystick connectivity adjustments. The back of the controller presents selectable triggers with adjustable range and customizable dead zones via the app. While its design is notably similar to the premium Raikiri Pro controller, it distinguishes itself with a cross-patterned four-way D-pad. Additionally, borrowing from the pro version, it incorporates the built-in ESS Dac and 3.5mm earphone jack. Illuminated by Asus RGB Aura lighting, customizable through the app, this controller is capable of connecting to both Xbox consoles and PCs.

The Asus ROG Raikiri Pro controller, also unveiled at CES 2023, stands out as the first controller offering tri-mode connectivity, even though it is not the first to include a viewable display. The ROG Raikiri Pro controller connects through a wired USB Type-C port, Bluetooth 5, and 2.4GHz RF, with the three modes primarily optimized for PC usage. Nevertheless, it can also connect to Xbox consoles through a wired connection. Asus boasts Adaptive frequency hopping technology (AFH) as part of its wireless connectivity options, reducing interference from other Bluetooth devices during gaming sessions. Despite its resemblance to the standard ROG Raikiri controller, the Pro version exhibits an improved 8-way D-pad and four additional customizable buttons on the back, facilitated by the Armoury Crate software. Its notable feature is the inclusion of a 1.3-inch OLED display, akin to the one found on Asus’s premium ROG Phone 6 Pro. The mini display can be personalized to exhibit custom images, animations, or text, utilizing the Armoury Crate software. Although non-touch sensitive, Asus thoughtfully incorporated two physical buttons on top of the display, enabling easy switching of device profiles during gaming and beyond. As a testament to their commitment to customizability, all buttons, including the two on top of the OLED display, are programmable using the Armoury Crate software.

While Asus’ Raikiri Pro controller represents a notable entry in the realm of game controllers with built-in displays, it is not the only contender in this sphere. Leaks have surfaced suggesting that Microsoft is also exploring this concept. According to a report from GizChina, the display on Microsoft’s proposed controller is noticeably larger than Asus’s 1.3-inch OLED panel, potentially resembling the size of Sony PlayStation’s DualShock 4 controller’s touchpad.
