CBS Studios Developing Animated Series “Among Us” with Owen Dennis, Creator of “Infinity Train”

Among Us, the immensely popular video game that gained traction during the pandemic, is set to be adapted into an animated series. CBS Studios has joined forces with indie developer Innersloth to bring this series to a wider audience. The talented animator-artist Owen Dennis, renowned for his work on Infinity Train, will lead the creative team as the creator and executive producer of the animated series. While there is no definitive information regarding the streaming platform or network that will air the show, the official description reveals that it will maintain the same premise as the video game. Just like in the game, the series will revolve around a spaceship where certain crew members have been secretly replaced by shapeshifting aliens, who gradually undermine the ship’s operations and murder everyone aboard. In essence, it is a captivating whodunnit mystery.

According to a report, the animation studio Titmouse (known for their work on Big Mouth) will handle the animation for the Among Us series. Notably, the production falls under The Animation Guild’s jurisdiction rather than the Writers Guild of America (WGA), ensuring that the ongoing writers’ strike will not hinder its development. As mentioned earlier, Owen Dennis, who contributed to Cartoon Network’s Infinity Train, will take the lead on this project. The show’s approach to the dialogue exchanges between the crew members remains uncertain since these arguments and player testimonies are central to deciphering the identity of the imposter. Perhaps, traditional voice acting will suffice, and it can be speculated that the season finale will hold a thrilling revelation.

Among Us initially debuted in 2018 but gained widespread popularity in mid-2020 when Twitch streamer Chance ‘Sodapoppin’ Morris streamed the game to an impressive audience of over 20,000 viewers. This attracted attention from viewers and countless other streamers, leading to the game breaking numerous records and dominating the Steam player base rankings and mobile downloads. By the end of 2020, Among Us accumulated a staggering 4 billion views on YouTube. The COVID-19 lockdown also played a significant role in its surge in popularity, as it provided a platform for people to interact virtually when in-person communication was limited. Its success even spawned a virtual reality adaptation called Among Us VR and plans for a potential sequel, although the latter was ultimately abandoned in favor of enhancing the original game.

In recent times, the influence of video games on Hollywood has become undeniable, prompting the creation of various adaptations to capitalize on their existing popularity. HBO’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us, which has become a prominent contender during award season, kicked off the trend this year. Additionally, Sony’s PlayStation Productions unit seeks to expand into mainstream media with projects such as the upcoming Gran Turismo movie starring David Harbour and an Amazon Prime Video series based on God of War. Even the BAFTA-winning game Vampire Survivors, known for its thrilling horde-slaying gameplay, is being transformed into an animated series.

As of now, no specific release date or information about the streaming platform or network for the Among Us animated series has been announced.
