Capcom Confirms Resident Evil 4 Remake’s VR Mode Will Be Offered as Free DLC on PS VR2

The virtual reality version of Resident Evil 4 remake will be released as free DLC specifically for the PS VR2 on PS5. In a tweet, developer Capcom announced that they were actively developing the VR mode for RE4 and later confirmed that it would not come with an additional cost. As usual, players will need to own a copy of the base game to access the DLC. However, since Capcom has just recently started working on the new build, it is unlikely to launch alongside the main game on March 24. Instead, it may be released at a later date.

This is not the first time that the game has received a VR port. Capcom previously brought the original 2005 version to the Oculus Quest 2 in 2021. While it is unclear which parts of the remake will be available in the PS VR2 version, we can assume that the entire story will be playable. The game will be tailored to make the best use of the orb-like Sense controllers, providing a realistic experience by emulating weapon recoil and incorporating apt vibrations while shooting. This announcement comes on the heels of Resident Evil Village also receiving its own virtual reality version, which coincides with the launch of the PS VR2. Players who already own the main game will have free access to this DLC, enabling them to step into the shoes of Ethan Winters and face various monstrosities, including witches, wolves, dolls, and more, in an attempt to save his abducted family from Mother Miranda. Additionally, a demo version is available to all PS VR2 owners.

In other recent news, gameplay footage of the Resident Evil 4 remake was revealed by GameInformer. The footage showcased a 12-minute segment set in the fifth chapter, where secret agent Leon Kennedy joins forces with Ashley Graham, who is held captive in a rural Spanish village. A notable change from the 2005 version is that Ashley now stays by Leon’s side throughout the game. Although players can command her to maintain some distance, they cannot leave her in a safe spot to make their task easier. If Ashley is picked up by a villager, players will be forced to chase after and rescue her. Co-director Yasuhiro Ampo explained that having Ashley constantly present was an intentional decision to make her character more impactful and avoid her disappearance throughout the game.

The RE4 remake also introduces field support agent Ingrid Hunnigan on the HUD, allowing players to freely move around while discussing mission status with her. In the original game, communications between Leon and Hunnigan were displayed on a separate codec-styled screen, similar to a Zoom call, but the remake will integrate these interactions seamlessly into the main gameplay. Additionally, players will have the ability to upgrade their knife’s durability at shops, which will be necessary for the new parry mechanic introduced in the game’s trailer last year, surprising many fans.

Resident Evil 4 remake will be available on March 24 for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. As mentioned earlier, a virtual reality version will also be offered as free DLC specifically for the PS5 and PS VR2.
