Canada Halts Expenditure on Facebook and Instagram Advertisements

The Canadian government has announced that it will cease spending approximately CAD 10 million per year on Facebook and Instagram ads. This decision comes as a result of a dispute over a new law regarding the payment of online news publishers, which the platforms owned by Meta have opposed. Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez confirmed this development and expressed optimism about finding a resolution to the conflict in a press conference held in Ottawa. He stated that the government is currently working on finalizing regulations that would mandate the platforms to share advertising revenue prior to the implementation of the law by year-end.

Rodriguez emphasized the government’s stance by saying, “We cannot continue paying advertising dollars to Meta while they refuse to pay their fair share to Canadian news organizations.” The Online News Act, also known as Bill C-18, was enacted into law last month in response to calls from Canada’s media industry for stricter regulations on internet giants like Facebook and Google. The aim is to enable news businesses to recover the financial losses they have incurred as Facebook and Google have gained a larger share of the online advertising market.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has not responded immediately to these developments. However, Meta has previously argued that news does not hold economic value for the company and has claimed that news organizations benefit from sharing their reports on Facebook.

In addition to the Canadian government, two telecoms operators, Quebecor and Cogeco, which run radio stations in Quebec, have also decided to halt their advertising on Facebook and Instagram due to Meta’s opposition to the new law.

In other news, several highly anticipated smartphones are set to debut in July, including the Nothing Phone 2 and the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. These new devices and more are discussed in the latest episode of Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. The Orbital podcast is available on platforms such as Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and others.
