Call to Content Creators and Influencers: Hold Off on Accepting Jobs During Actors and Writers Strikes

As the Writers’ Strike reaches its halfway point in its third month and the Screen Actors’ Guild prepares to form a picket line, protesters are urging content creators and influencers not to accept offers from these networks and streaming companies. Speculation is rising that YouTubers and TikTokers will be in demand as these companies look for alternative ways to add more content to their platforms. Strikers are warning them that taking these jobs during the strike may make it difficult for them to join any of the guilds in the future.

Superstore star, Franchesca Ramsey, stitched a TikTok video highlighting the significant impact that the upcoming SAG strike and ongoing WGA strike will have on content creators. As a member of both SAG and WGA, Ramsey provided further context and urged content creators not to work or scab during these strikes, especially if they aspire to join these union groups in the future.

Ramsey further emphasized this by sharing a letter signed by the president of SAG-AFTRA, which informs non-union members that providing any work or services for a “struck company” during the strike will result in admission denial to the guild.

Having influencers and content creators with their own shows is not a new concept. Channels like The Annoying Orange and Fred received TV shows on Nickelodeon. Additionally, Lily Singh (aka iiSuperwomanii) had her own successful late-night show, while Daniel Howell turned down offers from streaming platforms for his now-shelved comedy series. Furthermore, content creator documentaries have found their way onto Netflix.

The reason behind the strikes by these two guilds is their inability to secure a fair deal with streaming and broadcast companies. The Writers’ Guild initiated their strike in May 2023 as they demanded better wages and opposed the implementation of AI in the Writers Room. They argued that writers were being treated as “gig jobs” rather than having stable employment.

According to NBC News, the Screen Actors’ Guild will go on strike after four weeks of failed negotiations with streaming giants. The Guild has acknowledged the financial hardship this strike will cause for those working in the industry.

If influencers and content creators are considering accepting these jobs, it is crucial to consider the employers. These companies have openly stated that their goal is to subject the strikers to financial strain, possibly leading them to lose their homes and apartments. Their aim is to force these individuals to return, desperate for employment, and accept unfair or even worse deals. Do not allow these companies to take advantage of you and your future colleagues during these challenging times. It is the writers and actors who contribute to the success of these companies.

The Actors’ strike is scheduled to begin at midnight this Friday.
