Brand New Open-World Level Created by Repurposing Cut Halo Content

The original Halo now offers a playable campaign level that brings long-lost content from the game’s early days as an RTS and third-person shooter to the forefront. A group of modders, in collaboration with 343 Industries, have been tirelessly working on restoring over two decades worth of cut content for Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Last week, 343 Industries and a group of modders known as Digsite embarked on an ambitious project to revive cut content from Halo’s RTS and third-person shooter phases. This endeavor aims to introduce an array of new guns, enemies, vehicles, maps, and more to Halo: The Master Chief Collection, offering a community-driven and content-filled gaming experience.

This initiative not only represents an extraordinary achievement in videogame preservation but also positions the six-game collection as one of the most comprehensive and engaging titles available today.

However, this project goes beyond mere blog updates and restored assets. The Digsite team has released an entire level for Halo: Combat Evolved, utilizing the numerous restored assets to allow players to delve into the lost history of Halo firsthand.

Accessible through Steam and playable within Halo MCC, the work accomplished by the Digsite team, as showcased in the UnboundConman video below, is nothing short of remarkable.

Built within the sandbox space meticulously restored by Digsite from the 1999 Halo Macworld demo, this level features cutscenes, newly restored weapons, and even original music. The utilization of the Macworld map enables the Digsite team to maximize the game engine’s potential, pushing the original Halo to its limits.

It’s almost as if this version of the first Halo game exists in a parallel universe, with familiar visuals but notable additions like the iconic assault rifle with a grenade launcher and previously unseen assets. One must clarify that this level doesn’t represent a cohesive cut level from Bungie’s archives. Rather, it incorporates a diverse range of cut content from multiple iterations of Halo, culminating in a unique and free gaming experience.

In addition to their efforts in restoring content from various entries in the Halo series, the Digsite team plans to make the Halo 2 E3 2003 demo, a highly revered and substantially different version of Halo 2, available for gameplay in the near future.

While I frequently raise concerns about decisions surrounding Halo Infinite, such as the absence from Xbox showcases and the removal of certain features, I must applaud the incredible treatment given to the Master Chief Collection, even nine years after its release.

I sincerely hope that 343 and Digsite continue their remarkable work, transforming the restored content into usable extras. Both modders and players will gain access to exciting new features, while the field of videogame restoration will benefit from the increased accessibility of these fascinating decade-old remnants. Videogames uniquely allow us to experience and play with history, whether it involves the real world or the industry itself. It’s truly gratifying to witness the realization of this concept in the exceptional work done by the Digsite team.

If you crave more information, you can explore the Digsite team’s endeavors in restoring cut content from Halo 2 on Halo Waypoint. Furthermore, the Halo 1 Crash Site level is readily available on Steam. Subscribers to Game Pass can access all this additional content at no extra cost.
