Whether you’re a DC fan who wished for a better final outing for the SnyderVerse or someone who actually loved it, it’s difficult to find any pleasure in the current struggles of The Flash at the box office — unless you’re General Zod, of course. Each new record-breaking low that the movie reaches feels like adding insult to injury, as it continues to underperform and disappoint audiences.
After quickly dropping to fourth place in the charts and exhibitors resorting to buy-one-get-one-free deals to sell tickets, The Flash is facing a worrisome box office projection. According to box office enthusiast Luis Fernando, while The Flash has surpassed the $200 million mark globally, it is at risk of failing to recoup its production budget and the expenses incurred in its marketing campaign.
“Painful, but needs to be mentioned: if [The Flash] ends up within the projection, since the studio only gets half the share from the global box office grosses, it won’t even cover the total $150 million spent on marketing,” Fernando revealed. He also added that The Flash is currently projected to achieve a worldwide total of $280-$310 million by the end of its theatrical run.
As Fernando pointed out, releasing The Flash on streaming or not releasing it at all may have resulted in less financial loss for Warner Bros. This raises questions about the decision to shelve Batgirl, which likely would not have incurred as much damage to WB’s finances as The Flash. At least The Flash has not managed to surpass the disappointing performance of Morbius, which is a small consolation.
