‘Blue Beetle’ Director Wants a Batman Crossover at All Costs, Even if It’s George Clooney

Blue Beetle is poised to make its theatrical debut in just a few weeks, transitioning from a streaming exclusive to a full-fledged cinematic experience. While its marketing campaign has been relatively subdued thus far, things are now starting to heat up as Rotten Tomatoes names it the most highly anticipated August release.

However, once Jaime Reyes’ solo adventure comes to a close, what lies ahead for him? In an interview with director Angel Manuel Soto, interviewer Jake Hamilton raises an interesting point about Reyes’ sweatshirt, suggesting that he may have studied in Gotham. Hamilton then proceeds to ask Soto about Reyes’ encounter with Batman during his time in the city. Soto responds:

“When we considered the story, it made sense to show Jaime Reyes returning home after studying abroad… so we decided to send him to Gotham.”

But the DC Universe has undergone significant changes in recent years. Did Reyes encounter the Gotham of Affleck, Keaton, or Clooney?

“As for which Batman it is, that’s actually a great question. We wanted to create an atmosphere where it could potentially belong to any of the beloved Batmans that we have come to know. Hopefully, in the future, we’ll find out who he teams up with.”

Soto’s response is diplomatic, likely because the current identity of the DC Universe’s Batman remains uncertain. Technically, according to The Flash, Reyes’ Batman should be George Clooney. However, it is widely believed that Clooney’s brief appearance in the final scene of that movie was nothing more than a comedic one-off rather than a storyline to be expanded upon.

The next Batman to be unveiled will be the version in The Brave and the Bold, which will loosely adapt Grant Morrison’s renowned late 2000s run and explore the Dark Knight’s unexpected role as a father to his homicidal son, Damien Wayne. Casting for The Brave and the Bold is likely underway, so it’s possible that the Batman in Blue Beetle will retroactively become the actor chosen for this movie.

Regardless, the trailers for Blue Beetle suggest that it is shaping up to be a highly promising film. Let’s hope that Jaime Reyes successfully makes his mark when it hits theaters on August 17.
