There has been some confusion surrounding the canonical status of Blue Beetle. This confusion is understandable considering James Gunn’s confirmation that while the upcoming movie is not part of his DCU overhaul, the title hero Jaime Reyes is the first crimefighter to be included in it.
Gunn’s own Superman: Legacy has been deemed the first feature-length blockbuster of the latest rebrand, leading many to question how a character from one franchise can be incorporated into another when other popular heroes like Black Adam, Shazam, Superman, Batman, and the Flash will not be.
Director Angel Manuel Soto revealed to ComicBook that the solution to this predicament is simple, yet clever: mention well-known heroes without revealing their portrayals or realities.
“I think that’s the beauty of it, right? I think it’s pretty vague. We know Batman exists. We know Flash exists. We know Superman exists, but we don’t say how, where, or what. I think it opens up the doors to any interpretation or any direction James Gunn wants to go and because it is setting Jaime up, what happens now moving forward is game. I think that’s why they decided Jaime can be the first superhero of the new DCU because he is his own hero.”
So, technically, does this mean that the controversial “Batman is a fascist” line applies not to Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader, but to the future casting of the Gunn-backed reboot The Brave and the Bold? This question will be answered another time, but at least we know Blue Beetle has not been pigeonholed.
