Blizzard Acknowledges Community Upset over Diablo IV’s Robust Pre-Season Patch, Promises Response in Live Stream

Blizzard has released a new patch in preparation for the highly anticipated season 1 update of Diablo IV. This significant 8GB patch, version 1.1.0a, introduces various balance changes, bug fixes, and unique items. Additionally, it permanently unlocks Altars of Lilith upgrades account-wide for new characters. Season 1, titled ‘Season of the Malignant,’ takes place after defeating Lilith and revealing the Tree of Whispers in the main campaign. The launch of Diablo IV season 1 is scheduled for tonight at 10:30pm IST in India and 10am PT in the US on July 20, and it will be available on PC and consoles.

In the realm of spell-based characters, the Sorcerer class bears the brunt of the biggest nerf in Diablo IV season 1. The Devouring Blaze ability’s bonus critical damage has been reduced from 10/20/30 percent to 7/14/21 percent. Notably, this ability’s damage bonus increases when enemies are immobilized, but Blizzard has also diminished the damage percentages from 25/50/75 percent to 10/20/30 percent. Consequently, all classes experienced nerfs, leading to an outpouring of frustration from the Diablo IV community. One player even expressed their discontent on the official subreddit, which has garnered 23,600 upvotes at the time of writing this article. The complete set of Diablo IV’s latest patch notes can be found on the official website.

The new season aims to initiate a side saga in Sanctuary, where a devastating plague gradually transforms all living creatures into bloodthirsty fiends. The developers promised that players would be able to create overpowered builds by collecting Malignant Hearts from these creatures. However, the decisions implemented in the pre-season patch seem to significantly hinder character progression. For instance, the Barbarian class’s Hamstring (bleed) skill now only slows down Healthy enemies, while the Necromancer’s Splintering Aspect Bone Shard damage has been decreased from 50–100 percent to 30–60 percent.

Blizzard acknowledged the community’s backlash and plans to address the concerns in a Campfire Chat live stream session on Friday, July 21. Although the session will be streamed on the official Diablo YouTube channel, immediate changes to the features that impede Diablo IV gameplay’s pace should not be expected. Furthermore, Adam Fletcher, the community director, confirmed that Blizzard will remove the level requirements for World Tier 3 (40) and World Tier 4 (60) introduced in the pre-season patch.

Diablo IV is available on PC (via Battle.net), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
