The Biden Administration is making efforts to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels in the transportation sector. Their strategy includes offering tax credits to incentivize consumers to purchase electric vehicles and providing generous incentives for auto and battery manufacturers to build production plants for these vehicles. Now, they are proposing ambitious fuel economy rules that would require new passenger vehicles to achieve an average efficiency of at least 58 miles per gallon by 2032. Although some automakers may resist this proposal and environmental groups are calling for even higher targets, government regulators estimate that these rules could reduce CO2 emissions by 900 million tons and save drivers a total of $50 billon in fuel costs.
