‘Barbie’ Wins Big With $1 Billion, ‘Meg 2’ Debuts Strong

The Big Picture Barbie has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing the $1 billion mark at the box office and becoming a global phenomenon. It’s a testament to Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster that it continues to captivate audiences worldwide. In contrast, Meg 2 had a solid opening domestically, earning $30 million, and has accumulated a total global earning of $142 million thus far. Oppenheimer has also made an impressive impact, earning over $500 million worldwide, despite its lengthy runtime and adult rating.

Barbie’s success story continues as it grosses over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Meanwhile, Meg 2 has made a decent start and is awaiting its international results. Oppenheimer, despite its long duration and mature content, continues to make an impression. As we approach the end of the summer movie season, theaters nationwide are preparing for the culmination of “Barbenheimer,” with the highly anticipated debut of Blue Beetle on the horizon in the coming weeks.

However, things aren’t looking great for the next installment in the DCEU. Early forecasts suggest that the new superhero origin story won’t perform as strongly as other titles from the franchise, which has experienced a decline this year. On the other hand, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, released recently, may benefit from a relatively uncluttered August schedule before fall brings in spooky titles like The Nun II or Five Nights at Freddy’s.

The success of Barbie can be attributed to Margot Robbie, who had predicted its potential to earn over $1 billion. During its third weekend in the US and Canada, Barbie earned $53 million, representing a 43% decrease from the previous weekend. This drop showcases the movie’s consistent box office performance. Notably, Barbie is only the sixth release to surpass the billion-dollar mark since the pandemic disrupted movie theaters. Internationally, Barbie has raked in $572 million, turning it into a global pop culture sensation. Additionally, the film marks Warner Bros.’ first billion-dollar hit in four years since Joker accomplished the feat.

In second place, Meg 2: The Trench debuted domestically with $30 million. This sequel sees Jason Statham once again battling prehistoric sea monsters. Its predecessor, The Meg, earned $45 million upon its release in 2018. Similarly, Warner Bros. relies on international markets to boost the sequel’s earnings, with other countries contributing $112 million over the past weekend, resulting in a global total of $142 million.

Oppenheimer maintains its strong performance at the box office, holding the third spot. Christopher Nolan’s film, featuring Cillian Murphy as the mastermind behind the atomic bomb, garnered $28.7 million during its third weekend domestically. Surpassing $500 million worldwide is truly impressive considering the challenges it faced, such as its lengthy runtime and fierce competition during the summer movie season. With a modest 38% drop, audiences still flock to see Nolan’s latest project. The film has earned $114 million in IMAX screenings alone, leading to an extension of its run in that format.

Looking ahead, Barbie is projected to continue its remarkable run after achieving the $1 billion milestone. Simultaneously, the absence of similar competition could benefit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, allowing it to perform strongly over time. With a global debut of $51 million, the animated adventure featuring the turtles is likely to surpass the $100 million mark as it expands its release across more territories.
