The 2023 film adaptation of Mattel’s iconic Barbie doll collection has accomplished an impressive feat: it has now become the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history.
This week, Barbie reached the remarkable milestone of exceeding $500 million in domestic box office revenue, maintaining its position at the top for the fourth consecutive weekend since its theatrical release. According to Variety, the film’s current earnings stand at a staggering $537.5 million, surpassing the previous record set by Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed 2008 film, The Dark Knight, which garnered $536 million in domestic box office sales.
Barbie made its debut last month and immediately captivated both critics and audiences, becoming a blockbuster hit. Earlier this month, the film achieved the remarkable milestone of surpassing $1 billion in global box office revenue, making director Greta Gerwig the first female director to achieve this billion-dollar mark. While the movie continues to be shown in theaters, WB CEO David Zaslav recently announced during an earnings call that Barbie will also be available for streaming on Max this fall.
In our glowing review, where we awarded Barbie a remarkable score of 9 out of 10, my colleague Alyssa Mora described the film as “[a] captivating roller-coaster ride that combines femininity, emotional depth, and pure entertainment value.”
