‘Barbenheimer’ Hits Big, but This Charming Hamster and Lizard Duo Did It Best 20 Years Ago

Barbenheimer originated as a playful idea. The stark contrast between the vibrant pinkness of Barbie and the somber atomic drama of Oppenheimer made for an amusing proposition. Who would have thought that audiences would flock to witness such an unlikely double bill? Yet, against all odds, both films have defied the otherwise lackluster summer at the box office and emerged as major hits. Many moviegoers have embraced the unusual pairing and taken the plunge to experience them back-to-back.

Could Barbenheimer serve as a role model for other studios? It seems possible, considering what transpired in Japan in 2001. Clever studios noticed that Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack and Hamtaro: Adventures in Ham-Ham Land were scheduled for release on the same day. Recognizing the contrasting nature of these two films, they made the decision to present them as a double feature.

And so, “Godziham” was born. Theaters offered a special ticket that allowed viewers to indulge in both movies in one sitting. They even created official merchandise that combined the beloved city-destroying lizard with the adorable Hamtaro. This event was so well-received that it made a comeback twenty years later.

Hollywood has also dabbled in this concept. In 1968, a bold decision was made to pair the comedic gem The Odd Couple with the utterly chilling satanic horror Rosemary’s Baby, presenting it as “The greatest double-feature of all time!” Meanwhile, in Japan, Studio Ghibli released the timeless heartwarmer My Neighbor Totoro alongside the heart-wrenching Grave of the Fireflies.

We are wholeheartedly in favor of more of these contrasting double features. While it is unlikely that Christopher Nolan would have embraced official merchandising or promotional crossovers between Oppenheimer and Barbie, the unconventional concept has undeniably elevated both movies. Hopefully, we will witness similar endeavors in the future.
