Baldur’s Gate 3 – Should You Side With Nere Or Take His Head?

During your exploration of the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3, you may come across mentions of a True Soul named Nere from various sources. Nere is not exactly a friendly character, to say the least, and he is being pursued by the Myconid Colony for crimes against their people, as well as by the Duergar for outstanding debts. If you learn about Nere and want to track him down, your map will point you to the Grymforge in the Underdark, where Nere is currently trapped due to a cave-in.

The gnome slaves are working tirelessly to rescue the True Soul, as the room he is trapped in contains poisonous gas and time is running out. If you successfully clear the cave-in without harming any of the gnomes, Nere will be freed and will try to convince you to join forces with him. However, you may also have commitments to the Myconid Colony or others at the Grymforge to eliminate Nere. This guide will present both sides of the decision and provide instructions on how to free Nere in the first place.

To free Nere from the cave-in at the Grymforge, there are a few methods you can employ to clear the rocks that are trapping him in the poisonous gas chamber. One option is to use a Runepowder or Smokepowder Satchel to blow up the rocks. To obtain Runepowder, you can visit Philomeen, who can be found at the far north end of the Grymforge. To reach her, you need to take a route that leads to the docks near the Grymforge waypoint, open a door near two Duergar disposing of bodies into the water, and navigate past Ooze enemies and a steep path to finally reach Philomeen.

Once you find Philomeen, you will need to pass a couple of checks to prove to her that you are not a true True Soul. If you succeed, Philomeen will express her dislike for True Souls and grant you a vial of Runepowder. Armed with the Runepowder, you can return to the cave-in. However, it is advisable to first speak with Elder Brtithvar, who is located just outside the cave-in area near some steps. Interacting with the elder will reveal the clan’s need for Nere to settle his debts and their willingness to rebel against their own clan to ensure justice. If you choose to side against Nere, the elder’s rebellion forces can aid you.

To blow up the cave-in and free Nere, throw the vial of Runepowder at the rocks, making sure the gnomes are at a safe distance. You can place a bomb on the ground near the rocks to ensure the gnomes back away to a safe spot. If you wish to reach the point where you make a decision about Nere’s fate, it is crucial that no harm comes to the gnomes or Duergar during the process. Harming any of them will cause everyone to turn hostile once Nere is freed. Following these steps will result in Nere’s liberation, and now it is time to make a choice.

After Nere is freed, he will violently attack a gnome slave and then engage in conversation with you. At this point, you must decide whether to attack Nere or align yourself with him.

The decision to side with Nere or take his head ultimately depends on your character’s moral compass. Choosing Nere means standing with the loyal Duergar and immediately battling against Elder Brithvar’s forces. It also means going against the wishes of the Myconid Colony, who asked for Nere’s head. In our opinion, this is not the morally right thing to do, as Nere and the Duergar keep gnome slaves and are loyal to the Absolute.

If you opt to oppose Nere, Elder Brithvar will intervene and declare his rebellion against Nere and the remaining non-rebellion Duergar. A fight will ensue, but this time you will be fighting Nere and the non-rebellion Duergar soldiers. Upon emerging victorious and ending Nere’s life, you can persuade Elder Brithvar to free the slaves, and you will receive a significant amount of gold. This action will also permanently clear out the Grymforge, an outcome most players would prefer.

Of course, if you are playing as an evil or chaotic character, choosing to side with Nere may make the most sense for your role-playing purposes. The decision ultimately lies with you, but taking Nere’s head will allow you to complete the quests for the Myconid Colony and Grymforge. It will also result in more gold and rewards for you upon delivering Nere’s head to the Myconid Colony.
