Baldur’s Gate 3 lets you “wield the power of a mind flayer”

Baldur’s Gate 3 is on the brink of release, offering players a captivating Dungeons & Dragons experience. Larian Studios has dedicated countless hours perfecting Baldur’s Gate 3 and its new features, ensuring the game is ready to fly out of the early access phase. In the latest community update, Larian Studios delves deeper into the in-game role of the parasitic mind flayers.

Mind flayers, reminiscent of Cthulhu-like beings, are well-known and feared by long-time D&D players. If you’ve ever had your character’s brain turned into a milkshake by these tentacled creatures, you’re certainly not alone. Although mind flayers are not a class in Baldur’s Gate 3, players begin the game with one of their parasites deeply implanted in their brain. Larian Studios explains that while these creatures offer great power, there is a cost.

This is where Illithid Powers come into play. If your desire for power outweighs your concern for others or if you simply want to show off by levitating with your mind, you can tap into Illithid Powers. These powers can be unlocked and enhanced through a secret skill tree, allowing you to fully embrace your illithid capabilities. To discover these powers, you must find more of these creepy parasites scattered throughout the Forgotten Realms.

If you’re wondering where to find these parasites, some can be discovered inside jars or in pools of brine, while others can be found within the skulls of the infected. Once you encounter these creatures, you must consume them. Each time you consume one of these wriggly worms, you unlock a new Illithid Power from a selection of 25 powerful mind-flayer-inspired abilities. However, this does not mean that mind flayer romance exists.

The abilities are categorized into five branches, each with its own theme centered around manipulation, health restoration, psionics, and abilities that gradually weaken enemies over time by inflicting immense damage and torment. With these powers, you can control those around you, even forcing them to converse with you and say things they wouldn’t normally say. In a way, it’s a darker version of the Charm ability, which I definitely don’t rely on too much.

Some abilities are more aggressive, granting you the power to push and pull enemies like ragdolls during battle. If you’re feeling daring, you can even transform into a displacer beast. As a dedicated Baldur’s Gate 3 Druid player, I’m genuinely tempted to experiment with this and compare it to, let’s say, becoming a spider. However, the idea of eating worms is not very appealing.

If you’re wondering whether your companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 can also partake in the parasite-feasting fun, the answer is yes. In a recent community update released just before the game’s launch, Larian Studios states, “While your companions can also consume parasites to gain their powers, not everyone in your party will agree to it, and your companions’ perception of you can undergo a significant shift based on how you approach this opportunity.”

Something tells me I already know which of my party members would eagerly join in and which would be less thrilled about acquiring mind flayer abilities. I must admit, if Orin the Red would do it for power, then perhaps I would too, but only under the right circumstances.
