Lev Gleason editor/creator Charles Biro showed his penchant for creating bizarre villains in Daredevil Comics.

Publisher Lev Gleason, along with creator/editor Charles Biro and creator/editor Bob Wood, played a significant role in initiating the Pre-Code era. Gleason’s Crime Does Not Pay is infamous in American comics history and played a key part in triggering the Pre-Code era. Despite being known for crime and superheroes, Charles Biro made sure to incorporate horror elements into the Gleason titles. One standout example is the incredibly odd cover of Daredevil Comics #11 (Lev Gleason, 1942) CGC FN- 5.5 Slightly brittle pages, which is currently up for auction in the 2023 July 13 – 14 Pre-Code Horror & Crime Comics Showcase Auction #40227 at Heritage Auctions.

Daredevil Comics #11 (Lev Gleason, 1942)

Daredevil Comics initially started as Daredevil Battles Hitler, a propaganda comic that became infamous in American history and served as the first issue of the Golden Age Daredevil’s solo series for Lev Gleason Publications. Created by Jack Binder, the character made his debut in Silver Streak Comics #6 and faced off against The Claw, one of Lev Gleason’s prominent supervillains, in the next issue. After confronting Hitler and battling The Claw again in Daredevil Battles Hitler, the hero took on all kinds of criminals in Daredevil Comics #2 and beyond, fulfilling his promise to his deceased parents.

Biro seemed to focus more on the villains rather than Daredevil himself, drawing inspiration from Hitler and The Claw, resulting in a series of peculiar adversaries for his hero. The plot of Daredevil Comics #11 bears resemblance to the origin of Clayface in Detective Comics #40. The story revolves around a film where the actor portraying the monster becomes the actual monster in real life. With its unique cover and story by Biro, Daredevil Comics #11 (Lev Gleason, 1942) CGC FN- 5.5 Slightly brittle pages is currently being auctioned at the 2023 July 13 – 14 Pre-Code Horror & Crime Comics Showcase Auction #40227 at Heritage Auctions.
