Attack on Titan’s final episode has come out. It was dark, grim, tragic, and brought a lot of pain for the characters and the viewers as well. However, fans have spotted a fun thing in the episode — a Studio Ghibli reference.
More specifically, it is a reference to the studio’s most famous movie of all time, Spirited Away. In the final episode, when the Survey Corps members fight against Eren Yeager and all the other incarnations of the Nine Titans that were brought back, there is a scene where Pieck Finger transforms into her Cart Titan form whenever she gets attacked. She leaves her Titan body and then transforms again into a newer Titan body to fight again.
After doing this multiple times, she leaves her Cart Titan body after getting attacked once again and runs down Eren’s Founding Titan form. Her way of running is very similar to that of Chihiro from Spirited Away, as you can see in the clip below:

One of the animators who worked on the episode, Michelle Sugimoto, is known to be a big Studio Ghibli fan and uses Ghibli movies as his go-to references. He sneaked in a fun little nod to the iconic character and movie.
As for Attack on Titan, the show has ended with its final episode, and fans mourn the conclusion of the beloved series that started airing in 2013, a decade ago. Another interesting fact from the episode is that Eren Yeager’s voice actor Yuki Kaji’s baby had a dark role in the episode, which you can read about here.
