At 93, John Romita Sr., an Iconic Artist of Marvel Comics, Passes Away

Renowned artist of the comic book industry, John Romita Sr., has passed away at the age of 93, as announced by his son, John Romita Jr. via social media. Romita Sr. leaves behind a lasting legacy with pivotal contributions to Marvel Comics, notably his work on The Amazing Spider-Man. He co-created several iconic characters such as Mary Jane Watson, the Kingpin, the Punisher, and Wolverine, and his artistic influence can be seen in countless others. Romita Sr. married his wife, Virginia, in 1952, who later became a Marvel staff member, and they had two sons, Victor Romita and John Romita Jr.

Romita Sr. began his career in comics as a ghost artist for Les Zakarin on unspecified Marvel/Timely titles around 1949. Throughout the 1950s, he worked on a number of Marvel/Atlas titles such as Captain America and the Young Men for the publisher’s short-lived 1953-1955 superhero revival. In 1957, Romita began working for DC Comics on romance titles such as Secret Hearts, Girls’ Love Stories, and Heart Throbs.

Romita Sr. joined Marvel’s superhero Silver Age with his inks on Avengers #23 in December 1965. This was followed by a run on Daredevil and work on Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense. Romita Sr. then began his extensive work on Amazing Spider-Man with issue #39 in August 1966, taking over from Steve Ditko. His influential contributions to the series over a decade include the landmark story, The Night Gwen Stacy Died.

In 1973, Romita Sr. was officially appointed Marvel’s art director after unofficially serving in the role previously. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he played a significant role in the visual style of the entire Marvel Comics line and was responsible for designing or helping to design iconic characters such as the Punisher, Wolverine, Bullseye, and others.

John Romita Sr. was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Inkwell Awards Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame in 2020. His contributions to the comic book industry will be remembered for years to come.
