Asus ROG Ally Confirmed as the First Device with AMD Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme CPUs for Gaming Handhelds

AMD has made the official announcement regarding its highly anticipated Ryzen Z1 series of ultra-low-power CPUs specially designed for handheld computers, including gaming devices. These new processors are built on the same Zen 4 core architecture found in the current-gen Ryzen 7000 series desktop CPUs. They are also equipped with integrated RDNA3 graphics cores, which are the foundation for the Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs. With the release of these CPUs, AMD aims to introduce a new market for X86-compatible handheld gaming consoles that are similar to the popular Steam Deck. Although devices like the Ayaneo Air series and the upcoming Ayaneo 2 already utilize AMD’s Ryzen U-series low-power CPUs, they have remained niche products within the gaming community.

The Asus ROG Ally gaming handheld, originally announced on April 1, has been confirmed as the first device to ship with a Ryzen Z1 series CPU. Asus is scheduled to unveil more specific details about the device’s pricing, launch date, and other specifications on May 11 at 7:30pm (IST).

Currently, two CPU models have been announced: the Ryzen Z1, which features six multithreaded ‘Zen 4’ CPU cores and four RDNA3 GPU cores, and the more powerful Ryzen Z1 Extreme, which boasts eight CPU cores and an impressive twelve GPU cores. AMD promises unrivaled performance and battery life, offering an “elite gaming experience” in a highly portable form factor. Devices based on the Ryzen Z1 processors will support AMD’s Radeon Super Resolution graphics upscaling technology, as well as other features like Radeon Chill for power saving and AMD Link game streaming, thanks to the utilization of mainstream AMD CPUs and GPUs.

On the platform level, devices powered by Ryzen Z1 CPUs will support USB4, LPDDR5, and LPDDR5X RAM, in addition to Windows compatibility. This opens up a plethora of games and gaming stores beyond just Steam. Furthermore, when connected to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, these devices can function as full-fledged computers capable of running everyday Windows software. Users will also have the opportunity to take advantage of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription service for gaming on the go, as stated by AMD.

While official performance, temperature, and battery life statistics have yet to be released, Asus’s announcement on May 11 is expected to shed light on what potential buyers can anticipate. However, considering AMD’s commitment to the thin-and-light laptop market and its claims of delivering premium graphics performance with its Ryzen 7xxx mobile CPUs, the outcome of this endeavor is eagerly awaited. It remains to be seen whether other manufacturers will announce gaming handhelds based on these CPUs before or during the upcoming PC-centric Computex trade show.
