Army of Darkness: The Conjured Continuation Sets New Course from Movie’s Original Ending

Dynamite is set to release an exciting new Army Of Darkness series by Tony Fleecs and Justin Greenwood, serving as a direct sequel to the original movie’s ending.

Army Of Darkness was the inaugural comic book published by Dynamite Entertainment in 2004. Since then, they have expanded the franchise with various titles like Marvel Zombies Vs. The Army of Darkness, a New Line Movie that never came to fruition, and crossovers like Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash and Danger Girl. Now, in celebration of the movie’s 30th Anniversary, Dynamite is taking a meta approach by creating a comic book sequel to the film’s original, deleted, and replaced ending.

Originally, at the end of Army Of Darkness, the Wise Man advises Ash to consume six drops of a potion to return to the present day. Due to a distraction, Ash mistakenly takes an excessive amount and finds himself in a post-apocalyptic London, where human civilization has been destroyed. Ash laments having slept too long, which leads to a memorable scene. You can watch the alternate ending here.

The studio executives objected to this ending and demanded a more positive and optimistic Supermarket ending, which ultimately made it into the movie along with an additional fight scene. You can watch the theatrical ending here.

However, Dynamite will now publish a new series called Army of Darkness Forever #1, which serves as a direct sequel to the original alternate ending. The series, starting in October, explores the possibilities of what could have transpired. The covers for this series are created by Francesco Mattina, Arthur Suydam, and Nick Dragotta.

The story picks up immediately after the events of the beloved film, delving into three entertaining timelines: the Techno Army of Darkness in 2093, the S-Mart aisles of 1993, and the chaotic middle ages of Castle Kandar. Tony Fleecs, the superstar creator behind best-selling series Stray Dogs and contributions to franchises like My Little Pony and Gargoyles, returns to deliver the ultimate story Ash Williams fans have always desired.

If you haven’t seen the alternate ending, writer Tony Fleecs explains its appeal, stating, “It’s one of the great, all-time alternate takes. Instead of Ash ending up back in 1990s Michigan, fighting deadites at S-Mart, he wakes up 100 years after the end of the world in 2093. I remember the first time I saw it on DVD, my mind just exploded with possibilities. Ash vs. the post-apocalypse?! But then the theatrical ending has that iconic action scene and last line, ‘Hail to the King, baby.’ So, you don’t want to lose that either.”

Fleecs also discusses his collaboration with artist Justin Greenwood, saying, “Justin is one of my closest friends in the comics industry. We’ve always wanted to find a project to work on together, and this opportunity came at the perfect time. Justin is an exceptional storyteller, as evident in his works like Stumptown and Crone. What makes him perfect for this book is his ability to capture attitude. In person, he’s one of the funniest guys, a real raconteur. And that charisma shines through in his depiction of Ash. Both Ash and Justin feel like relatable, blue-collar individuals with intriguing jobs to tackle.”
