Apple’s watchOS Updates influenced by User Feedback, but this Request Appears Overly Demanding

If I were to ask you to think of an Apple product, the first thing that would come to mind for many of you is the iPhone. Some may mention AirPods or the iPad. But how many of you would actually mention the Apple Watch? It’s still one of the best smartwatches out there, right? Right. However, it’s not everyone’s preference. Now, don’t get me wrong – if you’re fully immersed in the Apple ecosystem, it makes sense to go all-in and invest in an Apple Watch. The idea of having a complete system is extremely appealing to anyone who has experienced it.

However, the Apple Watch isn’t the top choice for smartwatch enthusiasts because it lacks customization options, particularly when it comes to watch faces. According to an interview with TagesAnzeiger, it doesn’t seem like that’s going to change anytime soon.

In the aforementioned interview, Apple VPs Kevin Lynch and Deidre Caldbeck discussed the upcoming features of the latest watchOS update. These updates were unveiled at WWDC on June 5, 2023. They explained how the user interface has been enhanced to provide a more intuitive experience, particularly with regards to the Digital Crown. These changes were driven by user feedback.

During the conversation, the topic of third-party watch faces was brought up. The officials expressed that supporting third-party watch faces is challenging. From their perspective, it’s completely understandable. Apple is focused on continuously improving watchOS with new features and enhancements. If a third-party watch face were to encounter issues, Apple wouldn’t have control over fixing it since it’s not their product. However, Apple would likely still face criticism. That’s simply not ideal.

Nevertheless, even with the limited options for pre-built watch faces, there are apps like Facer that allow users to personalize their smartwatches, including the Apple Watch. So, if you have a specific idea that Apple is unlikely to implement, you can always turn to these platforms to bring your vision to life.
