Apple, Samsung, HP Halt India Laptop Imports After Sudden Curbs

Leading technology giants like Apple, Samsung Electronics, and HP have decided to halt new imports of laptops and tablets to India. This decision comes in response to the sudden ban on inbound shipments without a license imposed by Indian regulators. The move caught the industry by surprise, as they were expecting measures to reduce import dependence and boost local production. However, the licensing requirement has disrupted the multinational trade in foreign PCs, creating challenges for manufacturers who are already dealing with excess inventory and sluggish sales growth. These tech firms are now engaging with New Delhi to expedite the process of obtaining licenses, considering the upcoming Diwali shopping season and back-to-school period. It remains uncertain how long it will take for Apple and other companies to secure licenses.

In addition to the import restriction, India has a history of implementing policies to discourage the importation of foreign electronics. The underlying objective is to establish a world-class tech manufacturing industry and attract hardware makers to diversify their supply chains beyond China. Currently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is accepting applications for a Rs. 170 billion financial incentive plan aimed at encouraging the production of laptops, tablets, and related hardware in the country.
