Apple backs users’ ‘right to repair’ across the United States

During a White House event on Tuesday, Apple announced that it will support the US’ “Right to Repair” bill, making it easier for consumers and repair shops to fix their products, including iPhones nationwide.
After backing up the bill in the state of California, Apple is now extending this support to consumers and independent repair shops across the country, providing them with all the necessary parts, tools, and information available to fix their products.
Apple’s Vice President Brian S Naumann expressed support for California’s right-to-repair law during an online event hosted by the Biden Administration.
He stated that the company intends to honour California’s new repair provisions” across the nation, adding that He believes that federal legislation should be put in place to make it easier for consumers to repair products. “Apple also believes that consumers and businesses would benefit from a national law that balances repairability with product integrity, usability, and physical safety,” said Naumann.
According to California’s Right to Repair bill, manufacturers must have replacement parts, tools, and repair documentation for gadgets costing $50 to $99 for three years and for devices costing over $100 for seven years. Apple already sells parts and repair tools in the US, but following the California regulations nationwide means these items and repair guides will be available for years.
The Biden administration is advocating for the right-to-repair movement as a part of its wider campaign to reduce “junk fees” and other practices that are harmful to consumers and result in higher prices. President Biden issued an executive order in 2021 that mandates the federal government to enforce existing repair laws to foster competition.
Apple has long opposed the right-to-repair movement, so much that the company even went as far as saying that Nebraska would become a “mecca for hackers” when a bill aimed at increasing repairability was proposed in the state. However, in recent years, Apple has changed its stance and started offering consumers access to repair guides, selling parts and tools to them so that they can repair their iPhones and Macs on their own. The company also extended its support to California’s right-to-repair bill, eventually signing on to take the movement nationwide.
Apart from extending support to the bill, Naumann also spoke about how an ideal federal repair law should be. A federal repair law should maintain privacy, data, and device security, ensure transparency about parts used, apply prospectively, and establish a strong national standard to benefit consumers and reduce confusion, he said.
