Apple: Apple may be working on a ‘10th anniversary’ Watch X: All the details

The highly anticipated Series 9 of the Apple Watch is set to be released next month. This new model will finally introduce a new chip, marking the first update since the Series 6. However, those hoping for a major overhaul will have to wait until the 10th-anniversary edition, the “Apple Watch X.” According to technology insider Mark Gurman, the Apple Watch X will be the most significant update yet.

One of the standout features of the Apple Watch X will be its thinner design, surpassing all previous versions. Apple’s designers are currently exploring new ways to attach the bands and make the watch case even thinner. Previously, bands were attached to the chassis using a locking mechanism. While this design allowed for compatibility with older models, it occupied valuable space that could have been dedicated to a larger battery or other components. Therefore, Apple is considering a magnetic band attachment system for the Watch X, although it remains uncertain if it will be ready in time for the 10th anniversary.

Gurman has been discussing the introduction of a more vibrant and colorful microLED display for the Apple Watch for several months. However, this screen technology is relatively new and expensive. Apple has faced numerous challenges in shrinking down the display while keeping costs reasonable. Nonetheless, Gurman suggests that microLED may make an appearance in the Apple Watch X, aligning with his previous prediction of a microLED-equipped Apple Watch by 2024 or 2025.

Another long-awaited feature for the Apple Watch is a blood pressure sensor. Rumors suggest that this sensor may finally arrive in time for the 10-year anniversary of the device.

In his newsletter, Gurman discusses Apple’s strategy of offering less frequent but more significant updates for the Apple Watch. This year’s upgrade, which only includes a new chip based on the A15 Bionic, is regarded as the least significant in the product’s history. Gurman points out that the iPad used to receive annual updates, but now refreshes every 18 months. Similarly, the Apple Watch SE follows a two-year refresh cycle, and the same may apply to future “Series” models.

Considering that the first Apple Watch was announced in 2014, it is plausible that the Apple Watch X could be released as early as next year, in 2022. However, Gurman’s prediction indicates a potential launch in 2024 or 2025.
