Apple Achieves Impressive Double-Digit Growth Despite a 13.4% YoY Decline in Global PC Shipments for Q2 2023

According to a recent report by the research firm IDC, global PC shipments experienced a decline of 13.4% year-over-year during the second quarter of 2023 (2Q23). This marks the sixth consecutive quarter of contraction.

Reasons for the decline in PC shipments

The report suggests that the overall weak demand is one of the primary factors contributing to the declining PC shipments. “Overall weak demand has caused inventory levels to remain above normal for longer than expected. This includes finished systems at the channel level as well as the supply chain. During the quarter, all the leading companies, except for Apple and HP Inc., experienced double-digit declines,” the report mentions.

“The PC industry has faced an extremely challenging roller coaster of supply and demand over the past five years. Companies are hesitant to make big bets on a market rebound, not wanting to be caught with short supply like in 2020 and 2021,” adds Ryan Reith, group vice president for IDC’s Client Device Trackers.

Performance of Apple and HP

Apple saw a positive year-over-year comparison, benefiting from a more favorable performance compared to the previous year when the company faced supply issues caused by COVID-related shutdowns in the supply chain during the second quarter of 2022. On the other hand, HP dealt with an oversupply of inventory over the past year. However, the company is now approaching normalized levels of inventory, which has allowed its growth rate to stand out during this downturn.

Apple ranked fourth with 5.3 million units sold, representing an 8.6 percent market share. Acer rounded off the list in fifth place with a market share of 3.2 percent.
