Apex Legends Season 16 Introduces Team Deathmatch, Breaking Tradition with No New Hero

Apex Legends season 16 is on the horizon, and Respawn Entertainment has unveiled some exciting new changes for the game. In a departure from tradition, this new season won’t introduce a new hero to the roster. Instead, players can look forward to the highly-requested addition of a Team Deathmatch mode, where six players will engage in thrilling combat. The upcoming season, titled ‘Revelry,’ will also revamp the classes for Legends and introduce a new energy-based weapon called Nemesis. Apex Legends season 16 begins on February 14 across all major platforms.

The Team Deathmatch mode, like previous limited-time modes in Apex Legends, will be available for the first three weeks of the new season. According to Kotaku, this game mode will be similar to deathmatches in other games, featuring fast-paced action without downtime and quick respawns as players accumulate kills for their team. With six players on each side, the first team to reach 30 kills wins the round. It’s a best-of-three format, where winning two rounds secures victory. At the beginning of the match, players can select a loadout consisting of various weapons and a grenade. If your team finds itself at a disadvantage, you have the flexibility to switch between heroes, much like in Overwatch, utilizing their unique abilities to gain an edge.

However, Respawn Entertainment is removing the Arenas game mode from Apex Legends. They believe that Apex Legends is fundamentally a Battle Royale game, and they want to assist players in mastering the core game mode. Arenas, in its current state, fails to meet their objectives, as stated in their blog post. The intention behind incorporating non-battle royale modes in Apex Legends is to acclimate new players to the game’s core mechanics, such as cycling between weapons, characters, and abilities. This knowledge can then be applied to the main game. Otherwise, inexperienced players would quickly fall prey to seasoned veterans shortly after landing on the map.

In addition, Respawn will introduce a rotating mode playlist for limited-time events called ‘Mixtape,’ scheduled to launch in early March. This feature enables players to choose from a rotation of TDM, Gun Run, and Control modes, offering intense gameplay experiences with minimal downtime. Moreover, a new energy-based weapon named Nemesis will be introduced, although the studio is keeping further details under wraps.

For season 16, the developers are shattering expectations by not releasing a new hero. Instead, they are reworking the Class system by assigning each Legend to one of five classes: Assault, Recon, Controller, Skirmisher, and Support. “Each class will now have some kind of meaningful, unique perk—whether that be the way a Legend can interact with new loot bins or new ways to revive teammates,” the blog explains. Previously, all 23 characters were categorized as Offensive, Defensive, Recon, or Support. Respawn promises to reveal more information on these changes in due time.

Apex Legends season 16, ‘Revelry,’ commences on February 14 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. The studio recently announced the discontinuation of the mobile version.
