Asteroid City has proven to be a successful release for Focus Features, with Wes Anderson’s latest film earning $24 million in the United States and Canada alone. This past weekend, it garnered $2.23 million, further demonstrating the audience’s interest in the captivating story of a play set in a small town. Despite its modest budget, Asteroid City is well on its way to recovering its production costs, adding another success to Anderson’s filmography.
Compared to Anderson’s recent films, Asteroid City is on track to achieve the average box office performance of his filmography. The action-packed animated adventure, Isle of Dogs, earned $64.2 million in 2018. It featured notable actors such as Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, and Tilda Swinton. Anderson’s previous directorial effort, The French Dispatch, grossed $46.3 million worldwide. Asteroid City has already surpassed the domestic earnings of The French Dispatch ($16.1 million) and its international earnings of $30.2 million. However, The Grand Budapest Hotel remains Anderson’s highest-grossing film, earning $173 million from a $25 million budget. In comparison, Asteroid City currently stands at $34.6 million worldwide, projected to finish closer to The French Dispatch and Isle of Dogs than The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Asteroid City is set in the fictional world of the movie, where characters themselves portray other characters in a story. Jones Hall (Jason Schwartzman) plays Augie Steenbeck, a war photojournalist planning to attend the Stargaze Convention with his three daughters and son. However, Augie faces a dilemma as he hasn’t revealed to his children that their mother has passed away. Stanley (Tom Hanks), Augie’s father-in-law, disapproves of his secrecy and believes the kids deserve the truth.
As expected from Wes Anderson, Asteroid City boasts a talented ensemble cast. Scarlett Johansson portrays Midge Campbell, who becomes Augie’s love interest during the course of the story. Interestingly, the actors within the film’s world also develop romantic feelings for each other. Amidst the blossoming love, General Gibson (Jeffrey Wright) is occupied with protecting his territory from an alien attack.
