Over the past decade, it has become increasingly common to see Hollywood stars appearing in various Chinese blockbusters. One such film that stands out is the 2014 movie Outcast.
The concept alone sounds insane – a historical epic directed by the person who trained Russell Crowe for his role in Gladiator, starring Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen as mercenaries, broken by the Crusades, who are hired to assist a fugitive prince and his sister in overthrowing their older brother and claiming the throne. But in reality, Outcast turned out to be even worse than anyone could have imagined.
Despite its low four percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Outcast isn’t the worst film that Nicolas Cage was involved in during the 2010s, although that says more about him than the film’s quality. Originally set to release in Chinese cinemas in September 2014, the film was abruptly pulled from over 5000 theaters the day before its premiere, but this delay only prolonged its inevitable failure.
When the movie finally did release in April the following year, it performed disastrously at the box office, earning barely over $5 million in ticket sales. Perhaps it would have been better off permanently shelved. Regardless, the film has found an audience on the ad-supported streaming service Freevee, with FlixPatrol identifying it as one of the platform’s most-watched titles. However, viewers must be aware that they will never be able to retrieve the 99 minutes they spend watching it.
