Amazon’s Whole Foods stores to offer Pay-with-palm service

Amazon is enhancing its payment experience by expanding the availability of its Amazon One palm-recognition payment system to all 500 Whole Foods Market stores in the U.S. The rollout is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Once enrolled, shoppers can conveniently pay by simply waving their palm over the reader at the checkout, eliminating the need for phones or cards. Prime members who link their Amazon One profile with their Amazon account will also automatically receive savings on eligible items.

Since its launch in 2020, Amazon’s pay-with-palm feature has been offered in approximately 200 stores across the U.S., making this expansion a significant milestone.

In order to enroll in the system, new users can register online using their credit or debit card, Amazon account, and mobile number. The setup process is then completed in-store by scanning their palm over an Amazon One device during their next visit to a participating Whole Foods Market store. The system analyzes the unique numerical and vector representation of a person’s palm and underlying vein structure to create a “palm signature” for identity matching.

Alternatively, the entire enrollment process can be performed in-store at an Amazon One device using a credit card and phone number.

“We are constantly seeking new ways to enhance the shopping experience and delight our customers,” said Leandro Balbinot, Chief Technology Officer at Whole Foods Market. “Since the introduction of Amazon One at our stores two years ago, customers have shown their love for the convenience it provides. We are excited to bring Amazon One to all of our customers across the U.S.”

While the system offers a convenient payment method, some privacy advocates have expressed concerns about Amazon collecting and storing biometric data associated with U.S. citizens. Amazon states on its website that it will only share palm data with third parties if legally obligated to do so.
