Amazon India has made a groundbreaking move by introducing its first-ever floating store on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir. This unique initiative is part of the “I Have Space” last-mile delivery programme. Murtaza Khan Kashi, the owner of the houseboat Selec Town, has been selected to deliver packages directly to customers at the doorstep of their houseboats.
The Director of Amazon Logistics, India, Karuna Shankar Pande, expressed excitement about this development, emphasizing that it will lead to faster and more reliable deliveries for customers in Srinagar. Additionally, this initiative will create new opportunities for small businesses and further strengthen Amazon’s delivery network.
The ‘I Have Space’ programme was launched in 2015 and has since had 28,000 neighbourhood and kirana partners in approximately 420 towns and cities across India. It collaborates with local stores and small businesses to ensure efficient delivery within a 2 to 4 kilometres radius.
‘I Have Space’ is Amazon’s flagship programme that facilitates the delivery of parcels and couriers. Once enrolled, partners in the program receive packages at their store locations, which they then deliver to customers. Payment is made by Amazon based on the number of packages successfully delivered.
Amazon proudly discloses that it has over 28,000 ‘I Have Space’ partners spread across more than 350 cities in India. The best part is that joining the program requires no upfront investment, making it accessible to anyone interested in becoming a partner. These partners only need to collect and deliver parcels to nearby locations. On average, an Amazon ‘I Have Space’ store partner can deliver between 20 and 30 packages per day, earning a fixed amount for each delivery.
