Amazon Games is Developing a Lord of the Rings MMO for the Second Time in Five Years

Embracer Group, the holder of IP rights for The Lord of the Rings, has announced the development of a massively multiplayer online (MMO) video game adaptation. Leading the project is Amazon Games’ Orange County studio, known for their work on New World. The game will be globally released for PC and consoles, and is set to feature a persistent world based on the literary trilogy of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Currently in the early stages of production, not much information is available about the game. This is Amazon’s second attempt at creating a LOTR MMO, following the cancellation of their previous free-to-play title in 2021.

In a prepared statement, Christoph Hartmann, the vice president of Amazon Games, expressed their commitment to delivering high-quality games and their excitement in bringing a fresh take on The Lord of the Rings. They are grateful for the trust placed in them by Middle-earth Enterprises and are pleased to continue their collaboration with Embracer Group, following their successful Tomb Raider deal.

Embracer confirmed earlier that they have five LOTR games in development, scheduled to be released within the next two years, possibly including the MMO. Hartmann mentioned in an interview with IGN that the project is completely new and will not reuse any materials from the cancelled MMO. He also mentioned that the 2019 project had a relatively small team and was not a major production. Amazon Games has expanded its MMO roots through New World and also launched Lost Ark for Western audiences.

In addition to the MMO, Embracer has four other LOTR games in the works. The first is The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, a story-focused game where players control the character Gollum as he navigates Middle-earth in search of the One Ring. Another title, The Lord of the Rings: Moria, is a survival crafting and base-building game centered around the Dwarves. A third game, being developed by Weta Workshop, remains untitled. There are also plans for EA’s The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, a mobile game focused on turn-based combat and character collection.

No specific release details have been announced for the untitled LOTR MMO, but it is expected to be available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.
