Amazon expands its virtual healthcare service across U.S.

Amazon has expanded its Clinic healthcare platform to all 50 U.S. states, including Washington D.C.

The launch of Amazon Clinic in November 2022 aimed to assist individuals in seeking medical assistance for over 30 common health conditions, such as migraines, sinus infections, and pink eye.

Instead of employing its own physicians, the service acts as a platform to connect patients with licensed clinicians who provide virtual care. Present provider groups include Wheel, SteadyMD, Curai Health, and Hello Alpha.

This recent update means that so-called “video visits” are now supported nationwide, while message-based consultations are available in 34 states.

The service is accessible 24/7 and can be accessed through Amazon’s website and mobile app. The platform allows users to compare response times and prices from multiple telehealth provider groups, complete an intake form, and connect with their selected provider.

Depending on the user’s location, they can then communicate via messaging or a video call without needing an appointment or insurance. It is important to note that Amazon Clinic currently does not accept insurance, although insurance can be used to help cover the cost of prescribed medications received through the service.

Following a consultation, the clinician will develop a treatment plan, which may include a prescription.

In terms of cost, Amazon states that each third-party telehealth provider sets its own prices for each treatment. Average prices for messaging-based consultations are $35, while video visits cost $75. Users can compare prices by visiting Amazon Clinic’s condition page.

“As a doctor, I have witnessed firsthand that patients want to be healthy but often lack the time, tools, or resources to effectively manage their care,” said Dr. Nworah Ayogu, Chief Medical Officer and General Manager at Amazon Clinic. This statement was made in a release announcing the expansion. “Amazon provides multiple health services to offer customers the choice, convenience, and continuity of care they need for their health.”

Amazon Clinic is part of the tech giant’s ongoing efforts to establish a presence in the healthcare sector and follows several acquisitions in the field in recent years.
