Almost Included a Hailee Steinfeld Nod: The Emergence of the Beasts

Spoiler Alert: The content below reveals spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. The latest addition to the Transformers franchise, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, hit theaters with a bang this weekend and dominated the box office charts. This seventh live-action installment was packed with epic battles, interesting characters, and various cameos and references to other Hasbro properties. Despite this, one character who failed to make a cameo was Hailee Steinfeld, who played Charlie, Bumblebee’s companion in the fan-favorite spin-off, Bumblebee. However, according to the director of Rise of the Beasts, Steven Caple Jr., Steinfeld almost appeared in the movie.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Caple Jr. discussed everything robot related, and revealed that Steinfeld was under consideration for a potential appearance. “She was, but not necessarily for Bumblebee’s comeback,” Caple Jr. said before continuing, “I think we still have this line in the movie, maybe we don’t, but there’s a moment where Bumblebee says to Prime, ‘They are my friends.’ And he’s talking about Hailee’s character.” Caple Jr. expanded on this, saying, “Exactly. So they had that conversation, but we went even further with it where Bumblebee actually took out the Polaroid photo of him and Hailee’s character in Bumblebee. She took a selfie of the two of them together, with a Polaroid [camera], and so we actually shot that version.” Caple Jr. concluded, “We probably have it in the deleted scenes; I’m sure we do. But the way our movie ends, there’s always possibilities. Maybe she’s too busy in the Marvel world, but she’s a wonderful actress and I would definitely love to collaborate with her.”

Hailee Steinfeld Leads the Charge Across the Multiverse

As Caple Jr. mentioned, since the release of Bumblebee in 2018, Steinfeld’s career has skyrocketed thanks to her role in the Marvel universe as Kate Bishop in Hawkeye. She also lends her voice to Gwen Stacy, also known as Spider-Gwen, in Sony’s critically acclaimed Spider-Verse franchise. The second part of this animated trilogy, Across the Spider-Verse, premiered in early June, but Transformers beat it to the number one spot at the box office. Despite this, Bumblebee remains the quintessential Transformers movie. This coming-of-age tale perfectly captures the show’s unique 80s magic and Steinfeld’s infectious energy and charm are integral parts of its success. Even though Steinfeld does not appear in Rise of the Beasts, her entertaining presence and energy still seep through the latest installment.

Rise of the Beasts is Only the Beginning

Although it would have been great to see Steinfeld in Rise of the Beasts, Bumblebee’s reference to her was still heartwarming to Transformers fans. According to Caple Jr., there’s a chance Steinfeld could make an appearance in a future film, particularly as Rise of the Beasts has made such a strong start. While we wait to see if Steinfeld will re-enter the war between the Autobots and Decepticons, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is currently in theaters, and you can also stream Bumblebee on Paramount+. Don’t miss Collider’s recent interview with Steinfeld below as well.
